Disability in the workplace: awareness afternoon for 1st year engineering students

ENSTA Bretagne
On Wednesday March 23, Sylvie Guidal, the disability correspondent for students, invited 1st year engineering students to an awareness afternoon on the different types of disability people may have in the workplace.

From the show "tous pareils, tous différents, tous égaux" (all the same, all different, all equal) performed by the Appogiature company, the students were encouraged to question how they can combat prejudice and stereotypes associated with professionals with a visible or invisible disability.

As a manager or colleague, what is the best behavior to adopt?

In addition, after each scene, the actors engaged in discussions with the students, informed by feedback and documented analysis from medical professionals.

In order to provide the students with guidance and clearer insight into each type of disability at work and the conduct to adopt with respect to a fellow team member, the 3 actors rounded their performance off by sharing personal stories from staff tackling real situations experienced in the workplace.

The students’ many questions throughout the afternoon confirmed their interest in nurturing a more inclusive environment for people with disabilities in the workplace. In addition to this a areness afternoon, a selection of books is on display in the media library so that the students can continue reading about subjects to do with disability.

Photos on loan from the "disability sport" association are also exhibited in the Main Hall. Awareness sessions like this initiative are organized at regular intervals for students, alongside the support and inclusion scheme implemented for students with disabilities.
