Understanding our education system: the “Grandes Ecoles”

Since the 18th century, the Grande Ecole engineering schools have been training students to become managers and senior executives in the French private sector. ENSTA Bretagne is one of these highly selective schools. They can be small to medium-sized, but all provide quality education and have strong ties with the private sector.

Grande Ecole graduates enjoy a status similar to that of Oxbridge graduates in the UK and Ivy League graduates in the United States. They are naturally highly sought after by numerous major companies worldwide. There are about 250 different engineering schools in France. The most prestigious are certified by CTI (Commission des titres d’ingénieur), the accreditation body for French higher education institutions offering engineering training.

International student morning

This event, organized by the International Development and Partnerships team with the help of international students, is one of the highlights of the school year.
Its double objective is to promote engineering students’ and apprentices’ international mobility and to highlight the school’s cultural diversity.

Every October, the international student morning puts the spotlight on ENSTA Bretagne’s international students and provides engineering students and apprentices with the information they need to pursue their studies abroad.

Exploring other cultures

In the ENSTA Bretagne lobby, international students studying at the school give French students a taste of their local cuisine and culture and share information about different educational, administrative and business systems as well as customs and traditions.

Numerous countries are represented each year, including Brazil, Argentina, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Cameroon, Lebanon, Germany, Norway and Portugal.

Preparing to go abroad

This key campus event provides an opportunity for students and apprentices to explore options for studying abroad.

Whether through an internship or an exchange in a partner establishment, all ENSTA Bretagne students and apprentices must complete a stay in another country during their studies. On average, students spend 6 months abroad.

The international student event helps them to prepare for this experience and to decide which destinations are best suited to the field they wish to specialize in.

Teaching staff, the international relations team and students who have already been abroad share their experiences in information sessions and one-to-one discussions.

Our partners and networks

ENSTA Bretagne is at the hub of a vast network of industrial, scientific and technical partners. Both through its teaching and research, the school fosters strong ties with many companies, research organizations, and public and private structures.

Interactions with businesses are particularly prominent, both in teaching and research, across all the disciplines covered by the school.

Each year, new partners join this dynamic network, with a view to:

  • recruiting top engineers
  • offering internships and apprenticeships
  • putting forward study and R&D projects to the students for their applied projects
  • training their teams through professional training sessions
  • conducting research programs or experimental studies with the school's laboratories.

The strong involvement of businesses in the life of the school has many benefits for the school:

  • access to experts to give lectures, join judging panels, participate in conferences and alumni fairs
  • establishment of shared laboratories and research chairs
  • sponsorship of a class
  • financial support.

The ENSTA group: advanced techniques

ENSTA Bretagne and ENSTA ParisTech are two engineering schools under the authority of the Ministry of the Armed Forces and the French Government defense procurement and technology agency (DGA), in particular. The two ENSTA establishments share values and goals with the Ecole Polytechnique and ISAE-SUPAERO: excellence, multidisciplinarity, innovation and an international reach.

The two schools are linked by the same educational mission: to train students to become high-potential general engineers who develop expertise in a particular cutting-edge field and take part in complex, civilian or military, international technological programs. ENSTA establishments have gained recognition in the fields of energy, transportation, marine engineering and large industrial systems.

Cooperation principles within the ENSTA group

  • A shared name, ENSTA, associated with advanced techniques, high technology and large systems.
  • Selective enrollment, particularly in preparatory science classes (CPGE) from which ENSTA ParisTech recruits through the Mines-Ponts joint entrance exam and ENSTA Bretagne through the written tests of the Mines-Ponts joint entrance exam and the oral tests of the Mines-Télécom joint entrance exam.
  • Legal independence for both establishments with each offering different engineering degrees
  • A joint Advanced Master’s degree: Geolocation Systems and Sensors (6-year degree accredited by the Conférence des Grandes Ecoles)
  • A joint annual event: RD2M, the Rendez-vous du Monde Maritime
  • Joint extracurricular student projects (sports, BEST network, etc.)
  • Coordinated efforts by the two schools’ research laboratories

Industrial research chairs and shared laboratories

ENSTA Bretagne has partnered with businesses to create Industrial Research Chairs and shared labs. The goal of these partnerships is to work together on shared technological concerns (through the creation of roadmaps) and R&D, and to export applicable methods and approaches into the processes and industrial tools of private partners.
