A comprehensive program

This is a 4-semester program comprising 3 academic semesters and one semester-long industrial or academic internship. It covers all aspects of ship design: structural calculations, propulsion, hydrodynamics, stability, maneuverability, ergonomics…

The students are also made aware of the issues surrounding the ship of the future: safer, cleaner, more sustainable, economical and intelligent.

Year 1 and the first semester of Year 2 follow a solid core curriculum, culminating in the complete design of a civil or military surface vessel. After that, depending on the course and options chosen for Year 2, the skill set obtained will be more focused on:

  • Ship hydrodynamics, and the dedicated digital/experimental methods ("Hydrodynamics and Sailing Ship" profile or "Advanced Ship Hydrodynamics" profile ;
  • Ship structures, for marine structures that are subject to extreme loading, and composite materials ("Advanced Ship Structure" profile or "Hydrodynamics and Sailing Ship" profile);
  • Sea Work, in the oil or Marine Renewable Energies (MREs) sectors ("Offshore infrastructure: Energy" profile or "Offshore infrastructure: Yards" profile).

Graduates of the “Marine Engineering” major are capable of:

  • Designing a floating platform in the pre-project stage: vessels, submarines, sailboats, oil&gas platforms or MREs;
  • Ensuring consistency of design;
  • Assessing the performances of naval and offshore platforms (Speed, manœuvrability-control, seaworthiness, anchoring, propulsion);
  • Choosing the appropriate methods (tests, calculations, theory) depending on the issue at hand and the level of precision required;
  • Assessing the actions of the marine environment on structures (waves, current, wind);
  • Applying the design recommendations and regulations in the marine sector;
  • Proficiently using software for hydrodynamic or structural modeling;
  • Carrying out sizing calculations of structures and ancillary equipment;
  • Joining complex system design teams by adopting the typical tools and approaches of “systems engineering”;
  • Writing up design calculations, technical specifications and expert assessment reports;
  • Managing projects, providing information and making decisions throughout the design cycle.

This program is or can be taught in English. All students may take their exams in English

Graduates of ENSTA Bretagne’s Mechanics Master degree will have acquired the national qualifications of a Mechanics Master listed on datasheet 34069 of the French National Register of Professional Qualifications (RNCP). 
That said, it should be noted that the multidisciplinary environment mentioned in the national datasheet (automation, control, life sciences, Earth sciences, etc.) is reduced to ground vehicles for the automobile option and to naval and offshore platforms for the marine engineering option.

  • In charge of all or part of the design phase of a shipbuilding project (new ship, repair or conversion)

Production manager
  • Work coordination
  • Ship repair yard project manager
  • Handles the organization, procurement, quality assurance and deadline management on a shipyard or an offshore production site (building, repair or conversion).
Design manager and head of r&d
  • Designs subassemblies for shipbuilding projects (structure, propulsion, performance) with career development opportunities to quickly take on supervisory responsibilities.
  • Designs subassemblies for offshore projects (structure, loading, production, operations) with career development opportunities to quickly take on supervisory responsibilities.
  • Can work in shipyards or on offshore sites, in engineering firms, in technical centers or in test facilities.
Head of research and development
  • Within the R&D unit or a dedicated unit of a shipyard or an offshore operations business (designer, project or site operator), designs innovative systems that meet the anticipated market needs in a more or less distant future.
  • Can work in technical centers or test facilities.

This Master program also offers a gateway to PhD studies.

Business engineer
  • Pre-sales manager
  • Client relations manager (invoicing, change orders…) for a given shipbuilding, ship conversion or ship repair project
  • Project engineer for ship repair operations.
Quality manager
  • Preparing and/or managing quality plans for shipbuilding companies.
Auditing and consulting
  • Conducting audits and providing consulting services for specialized firms
  • Career development opportunities include independent firms.
