Loïc Carteron and Lorenzo Bercelli, two IRDL/ENSTA Bretagne PhD students, were rewarded for the excellence of their research posters during the 12th International Conference on Fatigue Damage of Structural Materials, held in Cape Cod from September 16 to 21.
The biannual conference is a key event for researchers in this field. This year, around a hundred participants came together to share their latest findings on fatigue damage, an area of study that is of great interest to the industrial sector.
Institut de Recherche Dupuy de Lôme and ENSTA Bretagne
At the Institut de Recherche Dupuy de Lôme lab (IRDL, UMR CNRS 6027), ENSTA Bretagne researchers have been working for many years on understanding the reaction of materials and structures to fatigue. They have developed a more rapid method of identifying fatigue properties by self-heating, thereby halving the time required for testing. Extensive on-campus experimental facilities allow students and researchers to carry out measurements and trials on various scales.
Two IRDL/ENSTA Bretagne PhD students rewarded
Loïc, who is beginning his third year of thesis work, presented his research poster on the durability of welded joints in surface vessels. He works with the self-heating technique to try to predict structures’ lifespan.
Lorenzo presented more theoretical research on the implementation of digital tools to predict fatigue behavior in materials and structures supporting mechanical multiaxial loads.
Competing against 30 posters presented during 2 sessions by PhD students from around the world, Lorenzo and Loïc won the event’s two awards.
We heartily congratulate our two doctoral students who, as well as their awards, received a year’s subscription to the leading journal in this field, the International Journal of Fatigue.
