3 years to become an engineer
Thanks to a progressive programme, ENSTA Bretagne guides you towards the working world in 3 coherent steps:
- a first year spent acquiring knowledge in the scientific and technological models which will enable you to choose your orientation,
- a second year focused on skills (mechanics, electronics or marine environment) and learning to apply methods,
- a third year focused on the « profession », designed to acquire specialized
training and pitch your skills against industrial problems or issues over the course of a long project.
Throughout these 3 years, great importance (about 30% of supervised activities) is given to using the cultural and communications tools which are vital for any engineer.
A situation-based learning approach (negotiating, convincing, leading, motivating, etc.) will let you develop the hard and soft skills an engineer needs and become the « project manager » of your own training.

6 options for specialization in the 3rd year
ENSTA Bretagne offers you 6 options for specialization, with majors in mechanics, electronics/information technology or maritime fields:
| Electronic systems: data recognition and processing systems |
This option is based on electronics and signal processing, orienting its graduates towards underwater or airborne instrumentation, aerospace, operational information systems or environmental monitoring. |
| IT systems: Informatics and automation for embedded systems |
This major provides the opportunity to study the issues and techniques of modeling and designing embedded IT systems. Engineering students acquire a profile of system designers and integrators, with IT and automation strongly predominating. |
| Naval architecture and offshore engineering |
Courses are devoted to the maritime environment, hydrodynamics and naval architecture, along with design of offshore vehicles, surface vessels and submersibles. It leads to a range of vessel engineering positions in shipbuilding and for the offshore oil industry. |
| Vehicle design and modeling |
This major trains engineers who can design complex mechanics, especially in the field of land vehicles (cars, armoured vehicles, trucks, etc.) In this major, you will also study the tools used to model mechanical, steel or composite material structures. |
| Energetic materials engineering |
Though mainly oriented towards mechanical aspects, the option also includes chemistry, to familiarize you with the principal types of energetic materials. The curriculum’s complementarity, valued by industrial firms, will enable you to work in a wide range of fields, including propulsion (missiles, rockets), weaponry, ammunition and ballistics, and pyromechanics. |
| Hydrography - Oceanography |
This major prepares you to become a hydrographic engineer, who will collect, at sea, the bathymetric data required for marine activities like shipping, oil drilling or cable-laying. It entails acquiring skills in several fields, especially concerning scientific instruments implemented on platforms at sea. |
